Frequently Asked Questions – Children’s Swim Courses in Düsseldorf, Neuss, Grevenbroich & Bedburg

Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our children’s swimming courses.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at any time.

At what age can my child start swimming lessons at Krokodil Swim School?

Children can join our beginner courses from the age of 3.
It is important that they have had some basic water experience and feel comfortable being separated from their parents during the lesson.

My child is older (7–18 years) and a non-swimmer. Can they still join?

Yes!
We offer dedicated beginner swim groups for older children and teenagers who cannot swim yet.
It's never too late to learn how to swim — especially in a supportive environment.

How can I prepare my child for the swim course?

Diving is essential for learning to swim.
If your child is uncomfortable with splashes, you can prepare at home:

  • practice in the bathtub or a pool

  • blowing bubbles

  • gently introducing the face to the water

Never force anything — some children need more time, and that is completely normal.

What does my child need for the swim course?

Your child should bring:

  • a swimsuit or tight swim shorts

  • a towel

  • optionally a bathrobe

Every child receives a Krokodil Swim School swim cap and special swimming suit as part of the welcome gift.

Wetsuits are generally not recommended, but a specialized swimming wetsuit may be used if your child feels uncomfortable in cooler water.

How are the lessons conducted?

Our lessons take place in rented school and public pools. Separate changing rooms are available for boys and girls.

What to expect:

  • parents assist with changing before the lesson

  • no street shoes in the pool area

  • the first lesson includes a short familiarization period where parents may stay briefly

  • after that, parents wait outside or in the changing area

Please be sure to plan enough time for changing afterwards.

Are parents allowed to watch the swim class?

No — all lessons are held without parent attendance.
This ensures:

  • better concentration
  • fewer distractions
  • more confidence and independence

Your child should be able to separate from you during the session.

How can I support my child in learning to swim?

Regular visits to a swimming pool help reinforce progress and boost confidence.
If you practice together, make sure to support the lessons rather than unintentionally contradicting the instructor’s guidance.

How long does it take for a child to learn to swim?

This varies depending on:

  • prior water experience
  • confidence level
  • learning ability
  • regular attendance

We also teach safe behavior in water, not just swimming technique.
This includes managing splashes, diving, backstroke, and freestyle basics.

How quickly will my child achieve badges like Seahorse or Bronze?

Our priority is high-quality, sustainable swimming education.
Focusing only on fast badge collection often leads to poor technique and unsafe habits.

We teach properly first — certificates come naturally afterwards.
